Thanks for this solution! I ended up using it because it seems the most clean to me. And +1 for also taking care of hyperref. I guess many people are using that.

+1 for the explanation of how margins work inside enumerate. A limitation of your solution is that it only works if \box{a} is quite short. The custom label expands to the left.
