Hm, I think in my actual document that section after the page break will contain only floats - which don't cause the balancing algorithm to move anything into the left column. If I add a filler line before the first float, it works better, but the caption of the first float ends up in the right column (while the float goes to the left). Do you happen to know whether there is any solution to this?

If it was a valid question, the appropriate thing would be to post your solution as an answer and accept it instead of removing the question, as it might help future visitors.

Oh wow, I'm feeling a bit stupid now for not typing at least a second line. This is apparently simply how the column-balancing algorithm decides to handle a single line. If I only write a single line in the entire document, it also ends up in the right column. And thanks for the AtEndDocument tip, but I'll rather handle it manually, so that the column balancing works (as I will probably have more than one line in the final document)
