comment Producing doc/docx from LaTeX
I, too, have a need to convert a Tex file to Doc (damned stupid submission rules for certain things); but when passing my Tex files through pandoc, the resultant file only contains section headers. Any ideas what I'm going wrong?

Wow! This is exactly what I'm looking for, thanks. Wish me luck in deciphering/understanding the code

The Japanese character set contains a LOT of Chinese characters, too.

comment How do packages work ? Why aren't they all pre-initiated?
I've always thought of the \usepackage commands as a facsimile for C/C++'s #include (or similar in other languages). If you don't have those statements, then the code (in this case packages) wont be included by the linker, thus they wont end up being used to compile the document.

comment How to practice LaTeX?
I'd have to agree with this. So much so that I went out of my way to find documents/presentations/whatever that I could created in LaTeX. At least, ones that would be created in "more traditional tools"

comment Arbitrary text parsing from a separate file
Wow! That's amazing. A lot of the specific commands are lost on me, but the syntax seems to make sense. I'll have to check all of this out in the man file for expl3. Thanks for the input - and the subtle pointer on where to go next.

The number of fields will be fixed and space trimming would be great, but not essential. I'm open to using any packages that will get the job done (there's no point reinventing the wheel and such)
