comment texworks is not launching!
Try starting it from a command prompt window. You might get a useful error message at the prompt that would help pinpoint the actual problem.

comment Adding newlines while writing text to a file
Sorry, I had to accept egreg's answer as it does exactly what I want. My bad for failing to be more specific earlier.

comment Adding newlines while writing text to a file
"I assume..." D'oh! Sorry, I posted the question at 3 AM after a long day. Thanks for the answer: it's exactly what I was looking for. Every day I see more value to learning the TeX internals...

+1 This works and I have tried it already. Sorry I failed to mention this. The problem is when #1 itself has newlines. I'll update my question to reflect this info.

comment latex preamble for writing a book
I think you'll need to qualify your requirements way more than this for an objective answer to be possible.

comment Is there some reason I can't change catcodes inside a command?
@cfr Thank you. This gave me the correct solution: moving the \catcode commands outside the \mycommand definition. egreg's answer gave me the explanation for what was tripping me up.

@egreg Ah. There's the bit of knowledge I was missing. Thank you very much.

comment Is there some reason I can't change catcodes inside a command?
Thanks for the explanation. What I don't get, though, why would the @ in @textbf be "already tokenized" with catcode 12 when I have explicitly redefined its catcode to be 0 only 2 lines before?

comment Strange behavior with compiling
This is probably due to the book class (or equivalent) adding blank pages to ensure every chapter opens on an even page. This additional page (the declaration) would change the parity of all subsequent pages and cause a blank page to appear after every chapter and appendix. Although I highly discourage this, you can use \documentclass[oneside]{book} to disable the default behavior.

comment Beamer-titlepage-picture
@Educ You can of course use \includegraphics[height=4cm]{...} as you have done. I was just giving you an example.

@samcarter Thanks for the suggestions. Neither one worked, unfortunately.

comment How to write a custom biblatex bbx file: no formatting, just plain data
I don't think a biblatex style is what you're looking for here; rather a re-implementation of biblatex itself.

Thank you. Could you also please add explanations for \leavemode and \vskip0pt?

comment Creating a custom Beamer theme. Need to remove the footline for the title page only
Works like a charm! Please drop by and leave an explanation when you get time: I'm clueless when it comes to TeX/LaTeX programming and I could really benefit from an explanation. If you start wondering why a clueless guy is making a custom theme, it's because the lab I'm working in is forcing everyone to use the same (Power Point) template for all group seminars and I simply can't do Power Point! So I'm currently trying to replicate this theme.

Good. If you don't mind, I'll leave the answer up here all the same in case it can benefit someone else.

Have you tried simply renewing \arraystretch inside the tabular environment?
