comment How can I make a figure that includes sub-figures at multiple-rows but different number of columns?
Instead of a tabular with two rows use two tabulars with one row each, the first with two columns and the second with three.

comment Edge weights and node labels
I'd suggest to read pgfmanual section 3 "Tutorial: A Petri-Net for Hagen". There you can find "Adding Labels next to nodes" and "Adding Labels next to lines" which is what you want to know.

comment How to draw the following GERT network node diagram using tikz
@RameshKannan: Glad to help you. I didn't inserted \usepackage{tikz} in my code because tikz option in standalone.cls already does it. If you use any other class (article, book, ...) you have to include it.

comment Reproducing image of a spiral using TikZ
@Kpym You're right. I've always thought it was necessary to close drawing area even when initial coordinate was also the last one. But I was wrong.

@Kpym What about (-1.5,-1) \foreach \i in {1,-1} {cos ++(.5*\i,1*\i) sin ++(.5*\i,1*\i) -- ++(\i,0)} -- cycle; ?

comment Why do TikZ Bézier curves print as rectangles when part of a closed path?
I've not tried to print it, but compiled with pdflatex (MikTeX) and converted to ps with pdf2ps, the result is correct.

comment How to draw a shape like file archives?
I think you can find a similar example in pgfmanual. If I'm not wrong is the example for \newshape. Some preaction will reproduce two or three times to look like your example.

comment Convert image to code (TikZ? PSTricks?)
If you accept a brute force solutions, you can try drawing by hand (tikz, pstricks, ...) over your pdf figures as background and one finished forget the background figure. This answer can be helpful in this case: tex.stackexchange.com/a/9562/1952

comment Convert image to code (TikZ? PSTricks?)
I don't know any program which can convert from pdf to tikz, pstricks, ... but both figures can be easily drawn with any of these tools if you know their mathematical expression and experimental values.
