Thanks a lot. This now works very well, however there is still one problem. If a footnote is split, say in pages 1 and 2, and the footnote is an RTL one, in page 1, we get RTL footnoterule (right) which is right but in page 2, we get LTR footnoterule (else) which is not right. What can be done in the case of split footnotes?

Thanks a lot for the reply but when I run this, unlike you I get [footdir] 1: right [1] [footdir] 2: right [2] [footdir] 3: left [3] [footdir] 4: right. I run tex at least 3 times and I am having an updated TeXLive 2012.
