Demo option isn't needed. I just found that keeping the comment after the first image was causing it to not overflow. mbox works. Accepted. Thank you very much

demo option to what? IEEEtran? Regardless, the mbox solution has not worked for me when substituted into my MWE above.

I also tried scaling the width instead of the height, but the result is the same.

Height of the image doesn't particularly matter, since even a 1px png will demonstrate the problem. But FYI the image is approx 3:2 width:height. \centering did not solve the problem.

+1 and BIG thanks for this .. I was struggling with this (my documentclass prohibits use of caption, and therefore subcaption, where for some reason \subref does not need \protect)
