I know of LaTeX for about 3 years since a friend in chemistry class told me about it but I really started using it for a year.

comment How to copy/paste from Word to LaTeX avoiding error?
I tried all possible combination. Without ucsif I do not replace the weird characters it will trigger error. With any font I use with inputencall the accents disappear.

This is what I usually do when I don't have too many pages and accents but now I feel like it's going to be annoying even with the "Replace All" because if I make a mistake... I am afraid I might not notice it and then everything might make no sense at all.

comment How to copy/paste from Word to LaTeX avoiding error?
Without ucsI am unable to compile anything. I get the following error: ! Package inputenc Error: Unicode char \u8:̀ not set up for use with LaTeX. Everytime I type in French, I use ucs it usually works fine, except when I copy and paste. If there were not 50 pages to edit I wouldn't bother... I guess i will end up using Word...

They are still gone. I also tried \usepackage{mathptmx}. With this \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[combine]{ucs} \usepackage[francais]{babel} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{lmodern} \usepackage{mathptmx}

comment ! LaTeX Error: Not in outer par mode
I've just had the similar problem however I was not using minipage but \begin{figure} environment and the ` ! LaTeX Error: Not in outer par mode.` error was due to a missing \end{figure}. You should look through your document and see if something like \end{minipage} is not missing.

Usually when I do with "utf8" only it triggers some error and I have to place \'e

OK I took off the french and "ucs". I use utf8x because with utf8 you have to write accents like \'eand it is kind of time consuming in french. I will try what you just told me.

comment Using \citep{} leads to “! Missing \endcsname inserted.” error
If I remove the babel package, I cannot use french quotes anymore and I get a bunch of errors linked to the fact that I am using french in the document and adding \shorthandoff{:} in my preamble didn't fix the problem.

the problem is not that the citation is not found it tells me "! Missing \endcsname inserted." by the way I will remove french babel. It's weird, I think in the previous document I wrote I used it as well and it didn't cause any error.

comment Roman number not showing with \pageref
I believe it might have simply been some compiling bug that led to this error because I copied pasted the full code again in my doculent and the pageref is working with roman numbers now.

comment Roman number not showing with \pageref
I don't know what I should copy/paste here because I have a huge preamble and I do not know which one is related to the page numbering except the \pagenumbering I wrote.

comment French accents not showing correctly in table of contents
Well I found the problem I was using \usepackage{mathpmx} with \usepackage{amsfont} just by deleting the second one it would fix the accent problem and keep the font as "Times News Roman"

Yes that works. But I have to write in Time News Roman 12pt well they said or an equivalent font... but school can be annoying about that.

comment French accents not showing correctly in table of contents
I had started it in LyX a longtime ago and then after getting a new drive in my machine, and reinstalling my OS, I switched from LyX to Texmaker and when I open my file it tells me that the encoding cannot be properly read and I have to choose one in a long list from ISO .... to UTF... I tried to create a document from scratch in TexMaker and copy paste everything but I get error and I cannot compile it.

If I use just utf8 I have to type all accents like \'{e} and I have to write around 20 pages like that. There are too many accents to type. Besides, I get this error ! Package inputenc Error: Unicode char \u8:de not set up for use with LaTeX.

comment How to change the caption name in the article class when using babel?
I had not seen that I was using the babel package somewhere in the preamble. Thanks a lot. I thought my problem was due to the fact that I was using the class "article" and not "amsarticle" like in the other document.
