I've been a die-hard TeXie ever since linear algebra professor introduced me to LaTeX in the fall of 2008.

comment TikZ + gnuplot on a Mac
I stumbled onto the same problem last year while trying to invoke gnuplot in TikZ, spending a whole night poking at the gnuplot installation via Terminal. Finally gave up when I realized I could also use the TikZ/PGF plot function to achieve similar results. Unfortunately, I don't think PGF has the gamma function defined. I may be wrong, though. There is some discussion about the issue on texample.net. Placing %& -shell-escape or similar commands at the beginning of your document may work for you. Check out the comments.

comment How can I add vertical space to a beamercolorbox to make it align with another one?
@Matthew: I'm familiar with copying stuff off Preview :) But thanks for the extra tip, and for enlightening me on this in general! So, hopefully, I can begin to post more useful questions/answers.

@Matthew: I'm a TeXShopper, too! Thanks for the info; very helpful!

@Matthew Leingang: Question: What's the quickest way to include part or all of your PDF output when posting a question or answer on this site? How did you do it for this particular question?

But I just learned something new from this: how to make slides in 16:9 aspect ratio. Sad thing, though, is most of the projectors around are still in 4:3 :(

comment Question mark over equals sign
@Aku: It has to be used within the math environment for it to work and that's where I assumed you were working, anyway ;) If you typed $ l.5 \?, then I think you're simply missing the closing $ symbol! Otherwise, it should work fine.

On point. Nothing more, nothing less. I define \newcommand{\?}{\stackrel{?}{=}} to make things go faster.

comment Are there any repositories of “killer slides” for Beamer?
@dchandler: This sort of functionality is not beyond LaTeX and there are people out there doing wonders with Beamer everyday. I use Sylvain Bouveret's awesome-looking themes (recherche.noiraudes.net/fr/LaTeX.php). And sure, you can perfectly position your graphs within columns and minipages, but probably not at the click of a mouse button ;)
