That is awesome! Is there a way to create a macro such that it calculates all the values based user input? E.g if I \customput{0}{0} it could place a box at (0,0) and (0,4)? The only way I can think of is counters, but then I'd have to create a counter for every instance of the macro (and use the calc package), kind of defeating the point of having the macro.

Possible duplicate of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/66349/…, although the answer was not spelt out, only pointed to. Also, this behaviour is still bizarre.

Thanks for pointing that out @egreg, prompted me to look elsewhere for the answer! Posted it below.

I understand this is the default behaviour, I'm more looking for a way to overcome it, whilst still having the starred questions.

Have you tried the paralist package? I personally use the inparaitem to solve that problem.

True, although with vim-latex, complex solutions are really easy to wire into the shortcuts. Auctex has the capability but my lisp isn't good enough to do them. But you're right, neither of these give the flexibility of changing it afterward.

Do you have the same version of all the packages used? Put \listfiles before \begin{document} to get a list of all the packages and their versions. I had a problem like this caused by out of date packages on a separate OS.
