comment Add a second label to a path in an automaton
I simply forgot to check this here since I had to do some work yesterday. I'm glad you got your answer anyway :)

I'm not sure if this suffices your demands, but you could just specify a second node with [above] or below the path. This wouldn't be totally automatic but far away from hardcoded. Yor path would look like this: \path[->] (q0) edge [bend left] node[above] {on} node[below] {a} (q1) (q1) edge [bend left] node[below] {off} node[above] {a} (q0); This produces the two a nodes on the inner sides of the edges.

comment How to put nodes or rectangles inside a node?
You may have a look at this post: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/7814/nested-tikz-nodes It sounds very similar to your problem. But I don't know if it works with the chain.

Can you be more specific in your question? It's nice to know how you write a letter. But what is your problem?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yes, this is exactly what I wanted. Thank you very much. Anyway, I would really like to learn more about the usage of \let, \def, ... And other things which are usefull when defining commands in LaTeX. Is there any good tutorial?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Thanks to you. My first problem is solved and the seccond neraly. The last remaining problem is, that for the above example 9.0 instead of 9 is the result. If you can solve this last problem and explain why this works (and mine not), then I would accept this as an answer. Aswell I saw the %many times behind the {, but never understood why. Where can I find the reason?
