comment pdfinfo doesn't appear to be working
Ran pdflatex with these contents, but OSX Preview 5.0.3 still shows just the document name as the sidebars top level TOC item. Isn't this exactly what pdfinfo Title should change?

comment Subfigure: error “Missing number, treated as zero”
This does not actually answer the questions topic, does it? The actual solution to this mismatch would be to rename the question to "How should I use subfigures?"

Great answer, thank you. I will however accept Davids answer because it answers the broader question of what causes this type of error message.

The error is caused by that rectangle drawing, since uncommenting it removes the errors.

comment Obtaining the location of the document class
This is not exact duplicate to the one marked as duplicating: That question was only concerned with including .sty and .cls files, which gets solved nicely by placing into $TEXMFHOME/tex/latex/yourpackage. However, placing image files to the same path does not work, at least not in my case. And yes, I did run texhash aftewards.

comment Why does tikz node parameters fail when given as a macro (set by \newcommand)?
Thank you Andrew, tex.stackexchange.com/questions/64137/… duplicates this issue, and has the correct answer to it as well. The macro expansion dilemma is more generic issue but not necessary for solving this problem as tikzstyles applied conditionally are more elegant solution.
