OK, but that did not give me the desired result, for one, the characters 0...9 are now typeset in the new Garamond, not 'pad'. Worse, all mathematics symbols are now typeset in Garamond.

I have seen a lot of really good presentations and animations really help sometimes, when the phenomenon you are describing is something moving. Let's just say that most of the really good presentations I have seen on conferences would be close to impossible to typeset in LaTeX in any reasonable amount of time.

It works with natbib though.

I couldn't get it to work, with or without hyperref. No backrefs appear.

I can of course solve the problem myself, using compilation options and, as you mention, another PDF reader. However, I would like the readers of my PDF to not have to worry bout this.

That still gives me an error. (file ugmmi8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading

Well, naturally I expected some disagreement here. :-) However, I stand by my statement that LaTeX is not (and not meant to be) very useful for this task. For presentations it is even more obvious, due to the limitations of PDF itself.

Unfortunately that didn't work. I am using a proprietary Garamond from my university which is invoked by \renewcommand{\rmdefault}{pad}.

I have made several conference posters using LaTeX, but I have stopped. If you can, you should absolutely try to use more visual software. Even PowerPoint is better than LaTeX. LaTeX isn't made for designing posters (or presentations) and it shows.

I can post some code, but I am also interested in the general problem of sending different things to the screen and the printer.
