comment gnuplottex not recognizing options
@Knigge46 --- you haven't gone far enough! The version of gnuplottex in TeXLive 2012 doesn't have the subfolder option. The version in TL2014 does (I don't know about TL2013). You might get away with just downloading the latest version of gnuplottex from ctan. However, this may cause trouble with other out of date packages. It would be best to install TL2014.

comment How to align multiple eqnarrays?
I think you should also use \DeclareMathOperator for diag and nondiag.

Try printing from a different pdf viewer application, or using a different printer.

comment Can I get $$…$$ to behave like \[…\]?
@Gaussler --- \bf, \tt etc. were used in LaTeX 2.09 and their meaning was preserved in 2e to maintain compatibility with old documents. Also, you might be interested in Barbara Beeton's comment here regarding Donald Knuth's thoughts on the use of $ symbols for entering and exiting math mode.

comment Vector vs. Raster: Is there any reason to include (larger) vector images into a LaTeX document?
@Szczypawka --- Some complex images (e.g. shaded contour plots with large numbers of different regions) can be difficult to represent as vector graphics, and in those cases bitmaps may work better. However, for an image such as yours, a (decent) vector representation will give better quality and smaller size. There is no need to use a vector representation, but then there is no need to use LaTeX. You can write your document in Word and draw your diagrams using Paint.

@Jake --- that beats my 2.9K xfig version! I think the original file was created by Adobe Illustrator, which is the work of Satan.

A 147 Kb vector graphic representing that image is woefully inefficient.
