Thanks for your answer. I selected it as solution as it is the closest to what I intend to implement. I also added its summary to my original question. PS: Thank for explicitly stating discardable nodes. Another concept I was unaware of while gnawing my way through the inner workings of TeX.

Thanks for the answer. I add my whatsit nodes during the post_linebreak_filter callback as I do not intend to alter the actual TeX source file. Insofar, this is not directly applicable to my problem.

Thanks for the hint. This solves the problem with the page breaks. However, I use the whatsit nodes to store the start and end point of each paragraph. Before shipout, this allows me to locate the paragraphs in the final page layout. Inserting the whatsit node after the head leaves the glue unaccounted for. Is it somehow possible to circumvent this?
