comment class and style files traversing up the directory tree?
yes, these were other alternatives: unique names and reorg. alas, the reason for not wanting the journal.sty in my texmf hierarchy is that I often want to zip up document hierarchies for mailing to others. having the ability to look back up dynamically until one finds a suitable match in the hierarchy is (sometimes) useful, even when it can be worked around.

comment hash (dictionary) data structure
ulrike+sean: endfloat with marker is a similar application to my usage illustration, but I want myinshere to print the caption text itself in the text to remind the reader what the table is about. this is what I need the hash (dictionary) for, in the first place. expl3 seem to be guidelines to programming and interface3 is very deep. This goes way deeper than what I can deal with.

sorry about the label caption misorder. I was just trying to sketch the application. I also edited the title.

it falls short on the propagation through macros, I think. for example\begin{tabular}{R{1.1}R{-1.0}} 1.0 & 2 \\ 3 & \bfseries -4 \\ \end{tabular} it's not a big problem and elsewhere, too. just wanted to point it out.

the solutions are an embarrassment of riches. thank you, karl (and others). I need to do some experimenting on relative typesetting efficiency [esp on pgfplotstable] next to decide which one I should use on long docs...

thx, david. actually, this is almost comically simple and it will suffice in 99 out of 100 cases. (in 1 out of 100, I may have some cells that start with \bfseries or some macro here that won't propagate through.) for curiosity---and I presume no---can such a really simple macro be extended to use whitespace (perl regex \s+) instead of '&' and \n as \\ , too, ala pgfplotstable?

question is : how do I define a newcolumntype that colors negative values in red and positive numbers in blue. will look at catchcell and post it if I can figure it out. thx, david.

comment separately centered table headers, separately centered table content
one drawback is that one needs to know a priori which cell is widest (3,628,800). but I guess this is unavoidable. is tabstackengine still needed in the second tex code example?

wow. great. definitely one solution. will check as solved in a day or two if this is the best one, too. thanks, steven.

thanks, david. the middle column is good, but it uses "advance" knowledge about how wide the content below it will be, though (and works with decimals here). the right column is not indented-centered, i.e., the letter "s" should be more under the 'r' in More.
