comment How to write Japanese with LaTeX?
Note that this example only works on Ubuntu Quetzal if you install the package latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab (via blog.mindfall.net/?p=221).

comment Set up a system to alternate between genders per paragraph
FWIW, I'd find that style horribly confusing. It's bad enough in baby books that do something like this. If you want to be fair, roll a die at the beginning of the document and then be consistent. You must have at least one die around, right? :)

comment How to configure Latex to open the last page in PDF reader?
Many PDF readers can refresh the document if it changes: e.g., evince on Linux and Skim as well as Preview (?) for the Mac. Then you could "go" to the exact page you were working on, not just the last page.

comment What are the pros and cons of using hard wrapping, and why is it so common with LaTeX?
The "break after 80 chars" leads to more readable lines as well. I think you'd be hard-pressed to effectively edit text that was 30 inches wide. :)

comment How to enter publications “in press”, or “submitted to” in BibTeX?
I could be wrong, but doesn't the notes field show up in the output with the @article type as well?

comment How to do custom page numbering
You didn't say whether you have a choice in the matter, but I personally find this method of page numbering infuriating because it makes searching for a particular page quite difficult, since it's no longer possible to predict how much deeper in the document page N is when I'm on page M.
