@JasonC: That's a very good point! My TeX did slurp it though. I wonder if that calc package or LuaTeX or something might have changed something and make it slurp it. I thought it worked but I realize now that my test wasn't exactly bullet-proof :)

Hm so I can not get TeX to change the size of boxes in order to avoid widows and orphans. That explains a lot... It's as usual, if something seems too good to be true it probably is...

I question whether you in fact have to use LuaLaTeX in order to get Bookman Old Style. I am sure there are other ways although it certainly is one nice way.

comment Wrong line spacing when changing the font size inside of a rectangle
It must be the way LaTeX treats paragraphs that's causing it. If I recall correctly the default line spacing is the same for an entire paragraph and depends on the text size at the start of the paragraph. When not using the font command the text size is changed after the paragraph is started and hence the line spacing is not changed.
