comment Overlay an included PDF with text
If you include the pages one at a time, then you can get the control needed to do this sort of thing on a per page basis, but it's probably just as easy to use \includegraphics --- agree w/ cfr that it's probably easier to use a pen tablet system, print the file into a tool such as jarnal and write directly on it.

comment can LaTeX help with book binding?
There was a presentation by Martin Schroeder back in 2001 on a commercial imposition system which uses pdftex: tug.org/TUGboat/tb22-3/tb72schroder.pdf

comment Add tif image to LaTeX
XeTeX on Mac OS X will read .tiff (and most other pixel image format) files, by using Mac OS X's coreimage for the heavy-lifting.

Thanks! Christian got me on the correct track, and I've got a working test file now. Next I just have to get both page types working in my production file.

comment How to redefine a command to keep track of page assignments w/o exceeding TeX capacity
As I noted, I'm trying to keep track of which pages have been assigned to what size. I believe th e problem is that \tabloidpagecount contains a macro which isn't expanded, so it changes to match the current page if it was only called once.

That almost works. It works for the total and standard pages, but for some reason, the tabloid pages equals the last page --- not sure how / why it's getting touched / updated / changed after it's set initially.

This question is about editor configuration and the former version was misleading (one would think that it is about defining a command in LaTeX).
