comment Error when using greek symbol in subscript in beamer presentation
@barbarabeeton Thanks, I tried as you suggested but got overwhelmed by the complexity of LaTeX's font handling rather quickly. In any case, I learned a little thanks to your explanation - a missing font definition at some step in compilation is the trouble - and I solved, or more accurately circumvented the issue by using a package to choose a font explicitly instead of leaving it up to the defaults, as the accepted answer suggested. In time, I do want to learn how font handling works, but as so often, urgent stuff (deadlines) trump important stuff (learning more). Thanks a lot for your help.

@barbarabeeton Thanks, would you have any idea on what I could try to do to fix it? I have searched the MiKTeX repository for the "mathkerncmssi" and "mathkerncmssi10" fonts without success. In my real use case I also don't fiddle with fonts nor themes for beamer, and just go with the default.

@AubreyBlumsohn Yes, that makes sense. Thank you ;)

I don't know if it's proper etiquette to delete my question, but since my problem was kindly solved by the remark @AubreyBlumsohn made, I would like to - just don't wanna ruffle any feathers. Any mods reading who know if I should go ahead?

Yep, you are completely right. Just after I posted, I saw this in the list of related questions. It seems the system is already better at searching for related questions than me, cause I didn't find that one when searching for help before asking. I checked, and found precisely that mistake. Now, if you'll indulge me... what is happening (internally) that causes a wrong number instead of an error if the label command has to follow section?

comment Problems when including diagonal line in a table cell
Yes, it works even though as you say, the result looks pretty bad. I did some further reading and found a way to avoid diagonal cells at all, and typeset the table elegantly. Thanks for your effort, I'll get back to this and try to learn what wasn't working when I'm done with the actual work.

On my system, the symbol doesn't cause problems. I'm going to change it however, although I don't know exactly what active letters are - and the standard column types (l,r,c) seem to be "active letters" too...

@MikeRenfro Thanks for your effort. I find that weird, since it has been defined by \newcolumntype{"}{@{\hskip\tabcolsep\vrule width 1pt\hskip\tabcolsep}} in the preamble...
