comment ConTeXt vs LaTeX compilation time
To do a realistic timing comparison, you need a relatively big document (50-100 pages), so that startup time etc. don't skew the results. Also keep in mind that by default Context uses LuaTeX and does multiple runs to get cross references right. To get the best speed from context use luatexjit (by compiling the document using contextjit filename)

That should be % macros=mkvi (note the space after %).

Check the value of \fontalternative.

And report this to the context mailing list, so that the module can be corrected upstream.

@Brent.Longborough: I completely agree. One has to be careful with pushing a rebased directory to a remote mirror.

In this notation, you can also get rid of the horizontal and vertical lines.

comment Splitting tables longer than a certain size in ConTeXt
I am not aware of an automatic way of doing this check. You may be better off asking on the mailing list. One option, that I occasionally use with Lua, is to count the number of rows upfront, and add split=yes only if there are more than n rows.

But I don't know anything about texmaker. That is why I did not post an answer. The command should correspond to context --batch %

Use context (ConTeXt MkIV, luatex engine) instead of texexec (ConTeXtMkII, pdftex engine)

comment ConTeXt with LuaTeX to compile mathml
You have not set an math font! Use \setmathfont[...] to set the math font. By the way, in recent versions of context, the functionality of the simpleslides module is now part of te core, but with a slightly different syntax

(Untested) my guess is that you'll have to use &LATEX, etc.

comment How can I efficiently convert TEI documents into LaTeX?
It is possible to directly process TEI files in ConTeXt. See ConTeXt wiki article for details.

Or is the question simply asking how to use Opentype Math fonts?

Which version of ConTeXt are you using (see output of context --version)? The above example works fine for me (with ConTeXt MkIV 2014.04.24).

BTW, you code also works perfectly with ConTeXt (after a minor change in the .sty file). Perfect.

comment Poisson disc sampling implemented in luatex
Very nice! A small suggestion. You can make all the lua functions local except poisson_points_list and perhaps generate_poisson. This will prevent polluting the global name space (an important consideration once Luatex packages become popular).

If I remember correctly, Trees, Maps, and Theorems does not use any hyphenation either.
