comment Using node after pic results in error in TikZ
@Kpym I'm actually not fixing the bug but limiting its effect. The node/pic parsing is designed as a greedy one but doesn't turn itself off after finishing so keeps parsing until the end. I don't think you need insert path if you are using pics though.

You can turn off the parsing with \path {pic[draw] {corner}} ++(1,0) node {hi};

comment TikZ plot dealing with infinities
@Kpym You can add ymax=1.4. Because it is an axis, it will limit the visible area.

Not to ridicule you but did you ever try a straight line in TikZ? Because there is not much else to do. And that you can find everywhere how. And that would be your MWE

comment Problem using atan in pgfplots
I don't have any problem either. You have conflicting compat keys and it should be outside the axis environment. I think you have an outdated version. Put \pgfplotsversion somewhere after the \begin{document} to see what it is. Latest version is 1.11

So you know what subset means I presume. To get out of that subset is really requires some unnecessary complication. Thank you indeed.

Flatten properly and there will be no difference. I don't understand your point. It is how people use Adobe Illustrator all the time PDF output with extremely detailed vector graphics. Nobody creates them in actual sizes. A billboard poster can be created in landscape A4. Exceptions don't rule the common point of PDF. Did you ever flattened a PDF and read what the commands are? It is PostScript language. I recommend you to do so.
