comment create new TikZ key with code and style tags
define another key with /.store in handler and use that in the code or use \pgfkeysgetvalueof and define the value as such.

comment ! Dimension too large in pgf
It should only run in Acrobat by the way. And I also only see a red circle moving towards the pitcher but I have no idea what it should look like. Have you seen it actually working?

comment ! Dimension too large in pgf
I don't know if this constitutes for a fix because I don't know what to see but if you go to the line below Plot the pitch comment and put pts after the coords (\xscale pt,\zscale pt), it compiles. The reason is that \xscale hits something more than 1400 and without any units that 14 meters which is beyond any TeX dimension. And send my regards to the author of this code. That's some patience right there to code this all up.

comment Why do people still use Postscript?
@AlexG As Heiko demonstrated a few times you can change the pen properties on the PDF code too after changing compression level. I couldn't find the relevant question though

comment Using node after pic results in error in TikZ
@Kpym I'm actually not fixing the bug but limiting its effect. The node/pic parsing is designed as a greedy one but doesn't turn itself off after finishing so keeps parsing until the end. I don't think you need insert path if you are using pics though.

You can turn off the parsing with \path {pic[draw] {corner}} ++(1,0) node {hi};

@Kpym You can add ymax=1.4. Because it is an axis, it will limit the visible area.

Not to ridicule you but did you ever try a straight line in TikZ? Because there is not much else to do. And that you can find everywhere how. And that would be your MWE

comment Problem using atan in pgfplots
I don't have any problem either. You have conflicting compat keys and it should be outside the axis environment. I think you have an outdated version. Put \pgfplotsversion somewhere after the \begin{document} to see what it is. Latest version is 1.11
