comment Fontawesome does not print some characters
This code appears to work fine on my TeX Live (up-to-date). (I assume you want the blobby black letter i) Suggestions: (1) make sure your distribution is up to date; (2) see if you can see anything "suspicious" in the log. Please indicate whether you are using XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX, too.

comment Drawing binary trees with LaTeX labels
@VáclavPavlík "too many labels" suggests that OP's tree may be considerably larger than in the answers cited. Just how well does tikz or tikz-qtree scale to large trees?

Or they can always use an old-fashioned device known as a "secretary" to type it all out again.

comment PDF with an expiration date through Latex
Sorry, but I'm sort-of inclined to vote this as off-topic. Maybe it should be on SuperUser.com?

comment Why using marginpar?
FWIW, not everyone agrees that everything Tufte does is very good by definition. I agree with @percusse that long interpolations are disruptive as margin notes, and, maybe even as footnotes. These days, I'm tending towards favouring end notes.

Just updated a typo in the title (I think) - firs => fits. If that was wrong, sorry. You may also care to reconsider meteorological (=> metrological) in the body.

comment Math w/italics in normal context, roman when in italic context (ie, caption)
Just seen this. "to get help with LaTeX problems": not only LaTeX problems, but also with style problems. We're not arrogant here, although we have strong opinions, and many of us are inclined to ask "why so ugly when it can be really beautiful with LaTeX". You're not the first, and you won't be the last.

As the author, of course I endorse this, by gitinfo has been superseded by gitinfo2.

comment Give a symbol an alphabetical “order”?
That'll save you keystrokes, but, depending on the type of document, it may sacrifice the quality of the index a bit.

comment Put the last date of the file versioned with Git
Looks reasonable, though it may be a bit brittle. I'm sure you've already thought over the cases where the working copy has uncommitted changes, and also what happens when you start adding folder structure. That's why I think I'd recommend using the hooks.

BTW, gitinfo is now deprecated for new work, and is kept on CTAN and in the distributions so that existing documents don't break. If you decide to use this, please use gitinfo2.

I believe gitinfo2 will do what you want, and more. However, it gives you access to commit dates, rather than individual file dates. [Full disclosure: I am the author and current maintainer]

I don't know what others do, but I habitually install everything, as it generally saves me from troubles of this sort. Do you have serious disk space problems?
