Thank you very much. That clarifies it considerably.

I took a look at the manual on cm=, and my brain now hurts. Would you care to add some comments on your use of cm= in this instance, plus an explanation of x= and z=? That would transform your answer from an example into a learning opportunity! Thanks in advance (+1)

I think it's a 90-degree rotation about the x-axis, followed by one about the z-axis, or about the z-axis followed by the y-axis

You might also want to consider the path OCR -> text -> RST -> LaTeX, if the structure of the document makes this easier.

comment Add more anchors to standard TikZ nodes
@Caramdir: Aha, nice! But as I'm never satisfied, I can also recall wanting to fit two incoming arrowrs on a side at 1/3 and 2/3 of the length -- angles don't quite hack that.

One problem I have with angle anchors is that they aren't particularly "semantic". I can recall at least one case where I wanted (needed?) something like "west of the baseline of the first line of text".

comment Best ratios of number of letters per line and of number of lines per page
@dmckee: Yes, I agree, partially, but (sorry) I just didn't have the time to do the necessary editing. I wouldn't have wanted just to dump a copy of the manual here, without trimming it to add a bit of value.

Yes, it's perfectly reasonable to answer your own question, and even to accept it, I think, though I imagine you don't get the points...
