Martin's answers normally do. (:-)

comment Emphasize first line of paragraph in LaTeX
Rather than highlighting the first line, have you considered highlighting the first idea, as expounded under \newthought on ~page 21 of the tufte-latex example book, or by using the \(sub)paragraph{} commands?

@dingo_d: The little guy with obsessive-compulsive disorder who lives in the north-east corner of my brain tells me that "typography is important everywhere". Keep smiling...

comment How does one detect whether one is in the preamble or not?
@Jack Schmidt: My feelings exactly. Sometimes it's a great learning experience to take an answer like @Villemoes' and adapt it to one's exact needs; sometimes "life's too short" and a regular old hammer out' the toolbox is what you need.

I'd vote this up twice if I could; once for the answer, then a second vote for "Wait until the rough draft is finished"

I took a look at the manual on cm=, and my brain now hurts. Would you care to add some comments on your use of cm= in this instance, plus an explanation of x= and z=? That would transform your answer from an example into a learning opportunity! Thanks in advance (+1)

I think it's a 90-degree rotation about the x-axis, followed by one about the z-axis, or about the z-axis followed by the y-axis
