comment Submitting to a journal with only LaTeX, how to include transparent images and bitmaps?
@Sigur This works well for the PNG's, and does not cause the quality to degrade nor the size to explode (as convert does). However, 1] it is not automated and 2] for pdf files it converts them to ps on import which garbles the fonts somewhere (embedding or not).

comment Wrong kerning after \beta on printout
@ArTourter it seems that evince may be the problem as it works with the adobe. This sounds like a bug with the pdf viewer and not LaTeX. Thanks for all the help! I'm going to vote to close as too localized, please help finish it off. I want to leave the post up so that someone else can come across it though.

@MartinScharrer The problem persists on two different printers (both HP LaserJets) and printing (not creating) on two different machines.

@Sigur latex -> dvips -> ps2pdf results in a working copy. What does this mean?

Any idea on why runnning pdf2ps -> ps2pdf fixes the problem? Do the images get somehow "mapped down"?

@percusse No change on adding [preview]. Using "first.tex" is not necessary, and any starting pdf should have the same effect.

@HeikoOberdiek Thanks, I didn't realize that the markup ate the tab characters and replaced them with spaces. Is there any way to stop that?

comment Align an equation and a tikz picture with anchor and baseline
Thanks zeroth, while (Martin's) centering around the box itself seems more robust - I really appreciate the tikz style tips.

Why the yshift (and how will I know what the proper shift is ahead of time, trial and error)?

@TomBombadil In the MWE example above, that produces no effect. Is the problem related to the fact that I'm wrapped up in an equation?

comment Coloring a black and white PDF graphic
Very nice! Does this require the fadings tikz library? If not, is there a more minimal working example (MMWE?) that simply changes (for ex.) from black to red? I really like this example, I just want to make sure I understand how TikZ knows where the shape begins and ends. Is it in the scope fading?
