@PeterGrill I've added an example with the pdf from an external host.

This is incredibly helpful in my understand of what goes on behind the scenes. Thank you! How did you determine from the PDF the rectangle coordinates?

@Jake I also get the same result if I open up the pdf with gimp. The higher the pixels per inches (resolution) the smaller the effect, but it's still there.

@Jake I'm using evince on a stock Ubuntu setup. I can't just put a solid background behind the rectangle since I like this to generalize to multiple (4) colors at each border.

Thanks Tobi, I didn't even think that those spaces would count, I thought the % would eat them up. Is it better practice to put a small function like this on one line or use many %?

@MartinScharrer Tobi/Herbert just solved it (and I'll accept once I can) but could you show an example with adjustbox? I think having that knowledge might be useful for more fine-grained questions.

Thank you very much for that link! I think it may be the solution I'm looking for. I'm also trying to learn the proper typographic vernacular, is ink the proper term here?

1] Is there a way to get a higher resolution than the setting of --hires (which I'm assuming is the 4000 dpi you are talking about)? 2] If a vector graphic is simply a collection of (bézier?) curves, isn't it possible to mathematically determine the bounding box without printing?
