Thank you very much for that link! I think it may be the solution I'm looking for. I'm also trying to learn the proper typographic vernacular, is ink the proper term here?

1] Is there a way to get a higher resolution than the setting of --hires (which I'm assuming is the 4000 dpi you are talking about)? 2] If a vector graphic is simply a collection of (bézier?) curves, isn't it possible to mathematically determine the bounding box without printing?

Glad to see you back! Thanks for the great solution - this works great! How would you modify the code to draw a filled rectangle instead of a hollow one?

Excuse my Lua-ignorance, are you saying that a LuaTeX solution would be able to handle the bounding box problem in a more robust way?

Great solution! Can this be modified to accept multiple words? At the moment the spaces are swallowed. (See question update).

@YiannisLazarides Thank you for the solution, I'll have to play around with soul a bit more. I've updated my question based off your solution, it seems that in addition your interword spacing is too large as well.

@AndrewStacey no I haven't, and only because I'm not sure how I can do that with with TikZ (or any other package). Can TikZ create a "mask" that is generated by text?

@percusse "...easier with Photoshop or Fireworks" I completely agree (though I'd use Inkscape myself). However, coming to this site I've been blown away at seeing how far LaTeX and TikZ can be pushed. I put the question out there to see if it was possible - the advantage with a TeX centered solution though is the ability to generate this effect on the fly!
