comment Distressed text: photoshop like effects in LaTeX tikz?
@percusse "...easier with Photoshop or Fireworks" I completely agree (though I'd use Inkscape myself). However, coming to this site I've been blown away at seeing how far LaTeX and TikZ can be pushed. I put the question out there to see if it was possible - the advantage with a TeX centered solution though is the ability to generate this effect on the fly!

@MarcvanDongen presumably the site is structured to allow answering ones own question, there's even a badge for it! tex.stackexchange.com/badges/14/self-learner If you do it this way, it allows us to upvote the question for it's merits separately from the answer you may give (of which we may have a different criteria for).

To keep it a proper question - why not erase your solution and write it as an answer? That way the upvotes will help determine the "best" bird to answer the question.

@GarouDan To be honest, I'm not as savvy as other users here that could differentiate what happens from pdflatex to plain latex. It may be worth asking as a separate question. If you do that, provide a link here so that other can follow!

@GarouDan try compiling it with pdflatex from the command line, that's how the examples above were produced.

@GarouDan Hard to tell without seeing what you are seeing. I've added a picture so you can see what the final result looks like, I've slightly modified the code by adding some outside text so you can get a feel for how the equation scales.

Looking deeper, maybe it is possible, but it doesn't seem like there is a visual demarcation between the footnotes, maybe a MWE would help?

I'm not sure this is what I'm looking for, in the Bigfoot example you gave there is only one visible footnote section that references itself, albeit with two internal footnote sections. What I'd like is a second footnote section that references the first footnote section with a smaller typeface then the last and another line separating the two, as if the first footnote section was an independent part of the text.
