comment Launching an external PDF viewer from Emacs/AUCTeX on a Mac OSX fails.
You would be better served by asking a new question. That being said, tex.stackexchange.com/a/70409/3731 suggests using open -a/Applications/Preview.app/Contents/MacOS/Preview %.pdf if one is already using a different viewer. If Preview.app is your default, adding this to your .emacs should work: (add-to-list 'TeX-command-list (list "View" "/Applications/Preview.app/Contents/MacOS/Preview %o" 'TeX-run-discard t t :help "Run Viewer")). Finally, this does the same thing: tex.stackexchange.com/a/119649/3731.

you are correct and I misread the question as opening the PDF at a certain line. Sorry for getting your hopes up =(.

I managed to achieve this using Emacs as an editor and Skim as a viewer. The relevant part of that configuration is also in the question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/11613/….

comment Is it possible to compile minted under Emacs?
About where to put the .sty files. Ideally, this package would be included in your distribution. If not, you would normally include in your local texmf tree. What distribution are you using?

comment Running out of main memory when using loops in TikZ
@PaulGaborit, I removed the empty nodes and increased the loop to what it would ideally be and hit the same errors, whether externalizing or not. Did you do anything special to get it to compile?

Oh, wow. This works perfectly, but it will take me some time to wrap my head around the syntax. Thanks!

I've never used luatex. Then again, no one has ever accused me of being a purist.

Thank you very much for the kind explanations. None of these ideas were obvious to me, so thank you for taking the time to explain them to me.

2. Using the cap=rect option on the black major tick lines gave the results I was hoping for. 1. I am having trouble figuring out where to put the [x=-1cm] option. How can I be sure that everything will be to scale if I leave it up to the TikZ coordinate system?

Fourteen rulers on a single sheet of paper. This will eventually be plotted on a continuous feed plotter that holds paper slightly larger than 1.20 meters in width.

Does it make any difference if, instead, you use (add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook 'TeX-PDF-mode)

comment How to create a table with merged columns and rows, and wrapped text, like in MS Word?
@PredragPunosevac, could I entice you into working the example above as an answer to this question? Not the final result, but the workflow. I use a combination of org-modein Emacs, "Save as CSV" in Excel and pgfplotstable, but when it comes to multirows and multicolumns I get sad, sigh in resignation and just go at it by hand after creating an initial template.

Thanks. That seemed like it would take me about 20 minutes and more pain than warranted. So many lines!

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take you to whip up an example like this?

comment How to use LaTeX tables with MS Word/PowerPoint
To create a cropped PDF per table, you might want to use the standalone package. It will output a PDF the size of the table you are creating. To convert the PDF to another format, you could use Imagemagick.

comment How long does it take to format a book in LaTeX?
Bells and whistles would entail fully functional cross-references, bibliographies, generating graphs where appropriate instead of using external images. All this assumes that you would want a layout more or less identical to the one already existing in Word and that the content is already complete in word. I may be forgetting other things. Would it be safe to say you want a fully working replica of the Word document, within reason?

Do you mean how long it would take a person to convert the book from .doc to .tex, with all the bells and whistles?
