comment Compatibility of bibtex and biblatex bibliography files?
@AdamLiter: Thanks for the clarification. (I really love the SE-model, where even a 4-year-old answer still gets better!)

comment Listings with some notes
Look up the escapeinside option that lets you escape to LaTeX within the listing. Then (with '@' as escape character), typeset your label using \llap at the begin of a line, e.g., @\llap{\tikz\node[shape=circle]{1};}@<the real listing line>

comment Can an environment replace text within it during compilation?
The babel package provides Esperanto support, the accented characters are typeset by making ^ active: ^c becomes ĉ. Not exactly what you are looking for, but definitely less cumbersome. (Besides, bable takes also care of correct hyphenation.)

comment Querying and modifying TEXINPUTS from inside a latex file?
+1 Oh I would love to have a feature like that. It would solve so many problems in my cross-site, cross-platform and dozen-of-participants projects.

comment How to get a numbered alphabetical bibliography with (author, year) citations
@Timm: No, it should be backend=bibtex8, as biber is the default in recent versions of biblatex. It is perfectly possible to still use bibtex, but in that case highly preferrable to use the 8-bit version including the "Wolfgang" switch (bibtex8 -W) as the internal buffers of classical 7-bit bibtex are often too small.
