comment Is it possible to scan until the end of the current `\item`
@egreg: I did consider this, but refrained from it I consider it as too fragile. The fact that the blank lines suddenly are mandatory would be a clear violation of the principle of least surprise for anybody editing my stuff.

+1 Neat trick, which, however only solves this particular example. (Thats always the problem with MWEs, in the end you have oversimplified...). I am actually seeking a general solution that would also work if I want to parse into more than two parts. Moreover, I need to mix my customized \Items and ordinary \items within the same list.

@Werner: I know. My example is furchtbar :-)

comment Beamer Bug: subsubsections are missing in ToC
@JosephWright: Oh, I just saw that 3.17 is available on CTAN. Nice! (I didn't look there, as in the past only very few beamer releases made it actually there. Seems that things have changed a bit since you have become a maintainer :-)

@JosephWright: I had tried cloning the mercurial repo, but failed to use it as it contains all this unexpanded \ProvidePackageRCS $Header$ stuff.

Martin, this is way cool! I have edited the package update into the question.

Just to rule out AR: Does it work if you print from other PDF Readers? Which one have you tested?

Shades and transparencies are a relatively recent PDF feature and a beast with respect to their transition to Postscript, which is usually happens when printed. Take a look at this answer. Even though the question and problem was something different and the solution does not immediately apply to your problem, it may explain the backgrounds that cause the troubles.

comment What are the pros and cons of using hard wrapping, and why is it so common with LaTeX?
@ReidPriedhorsky: This is an opinion I often hear, but do not really understand: Just configure your editor to soft-wrap after at most 80 columns and there you are. The length of physical lines should depend on the content, screen lines can be configured to whatever you prefer (given a half-decent editor, of course).

comment Inserting an image using an http URL
It has, but you are specifically asking for an \includegraphics extension to support this. The task to turn the code of the other answer it into an package that extends the \includegraphics interface is still open :-)

A PhD thesis is either long or good.

@AndrewStacey: The word-wise diff tools I am aware of typically mark every changed line (e.g. by a light red background) and than within that line the actually changed words (e.g., by a dark red background.). So the context is always there.

The test for the .aux-file to prevent the pgfpages transformations on the first run is pretty neat!

+1 for sharing: Yory, that's a cute little package, please advertise more :-) You might consider adding an environment version of your \shadowbox.

"I want to know if Word ... can handle typesetting..." Well, in that case the question is off topic and should be closed.

Given the quality of the respective answers, I vote for not closing this question. Luiz, you might consider editing your question and the question title, so that it better fits into a QA format. Something like "How does Word 2010 compare to LaTeX for Typesetting Math"
