Started hacking in 1975. Haven't stopped. Currently happiest in Perl, Lisp and C/C++. Have done well writing interfaces for chess engines. Use chess as a way to learn a new (to me) language.

Least I forget (and I did :) ) I started TeX-ing after returning from the 2nd West Coast Computer Faire. I spent a fair amount of time talking to a fellow hacker who was porting TeX to an 8-bit environment. Don't remember if he succeeded or not (memory may not be the first to go, but go it does) but I do remember that I owned a PDP-11/23 at that time and I believe that DECUS had a usable version. Primary problem was that this was a bit before the arrival of either Laser Printers or Postscript. But once all of the necessary ingredients were put together I fell into the land of good looking documents. I have to say that it helped that my Father-In-Law owned and used two Franklin printing presses and was kind enough to let me play---good old days indeed.

@mafp no attempt using xelatex -recorder "test.tex" fails. Tried after a failed run of latexmk and after latexmk -C with no negative results.

@mafp works fine with stand-alone xelatex Problem is with a latexmk run. Also when I tried your suggestion I got: xelatex: Unsupported command-line option.

@doncherry Yeah---the lack of a MWE bothers me and at this point that might be a good way to track down what's going wrong.

@doncherry Just for grins I re-ran latexmk after the successful xelatex run and it produced the same problematic output as the preceding. I suppose the good news is that I can run things by hand until I either figure out what is wrong or am told (either will do fine...)

comment Showcase of beautiful typography done in TeX & friends
The book is beautiful. The binding is trash. Perhaps mine is a lemon, but it by far and away the worst I've seen from Springer. That said, it is still right at hand with the rest of my LaTeX shelf. Kudos :)

So when was 'Principia' published? I've always wanted a copy---preferable a hardback (multi volume I believe) but I'd settle for a pdf :)

comment {(x+y)}^2 or (x+y)^2?
As both a typophile (type that word and ask Google for spelling suggestions :) ) and an amateur mathematician (if meta) I prefer the second line to the first as I have a preference for closely attaching functions and parenthesis. Just sayin...

@BrianFeran You checked? If that is what you found out, then that is a bit strange in that I've talked (alright emailed) with either share or write and was led to believe that XeLaTeX was on the menu so to speak. Good to know if not.

Is there an off by one error here or am I unable to count? Bear in mind that inability to count may be true regardless :)
