Thanks for this but it has caused the lower limit to appear vertically below the other rather than joined with the bottom of the integral. any idea how to fix it.

Thanks, I am able to produce these symbols but for some odd reason other symbols like \infty or \lambda are not appearing now. Any idea why. Just use the code you just gave me and try a symbol outside the range.

I checked the original pdf in Acrobat, it was produced by Ghostscript/DVIPS so I have reason to assume it was a Tex document. The font used in that pdf is simply "Times". Good answer though.
