comment Workflow for converting LaTeX into Open Office / MS Word Format
As in Aditya's answer a markup language may be a solution. Org-mode exports directly to both latex and odt, and also support execution of code (like Sweave). Math is inputted as LaTeX. I have produced fairly advanced documents (equations, figures, tables) that are of good quality when exporting as both odt and latex. Citations are a hurdle in this setup ATM but work is being done in this area.

comment unicode-math and oldstyle figures
My numbers inline are easy to interpret, e.g. magnitudes and references. In text I prefer old style figures (osf). In displayed equations I may want to avoid pitfalls of osf. Is it good style and advisable? I don't know. Testing with some smaller documents suggests it works OK (IMO). Edit: Do let me know if this breaks some typographic practices.

comment KOMA-Script and subcaption: wrong counting
Thanks for the explanation. Note though, that captions=tablesignature is the default so I wasn't really trying to cheat it. I was just trying to a subtable configuration a la subfigure (in general I prefer subcaption). So would you advice a different approach to setting up a one-table-two-subtabulars kind of thing?

I use the latest version from TeX Live 2012. For caption cat-version: 3.3 (2013-02-03) and for KOMA-Script cat-version: 3.11b. Now that you point it out there is a newer version of caption on CTAN which I haven't tried since TeX Live 2012 froze and TeX Live 2013 isn't released. IS that the version you're using?
