Useful notes for some of my answers:

The demo option for graphicx simply replaces actual figures with black rectangles; do not use that option in your actual document.

@MarcvanDongen Gladly! I was absent for the past months, but today I saw your message and I added the code as an entry: tex.stackexchange.com/a/208922/3954.

You need to specify a width in the mandatory argument for each of the subfigure environments; something like \begin{subfigure}[b]{.6\textwidth}...\end{subfigure}. It is not clear to me, however, why are you using subfigure for each matrix.

comment Problem with verbatim in a beamer frame
Yes, you're right. Both verbatim and semiverbatim are very basic verbatim environments; an option using the powerful listings package could be a better possibility here.

comment Problem with verbatim in a beamer frame
+1. Another option (that I just suggested in a comment to the question) is to use beamer's own semiverbatim instead of verbatim; the former doesn't require an explicit fragile for the frame.

Or use beamer's own semivarbatim environment instead of verbatim, as in \begin{ssemiverbatim}...\end{semiverbatim}.

comment Beamer - Color of header foreground with AnnArbor theme
This little test document \documentclass{beamer} \usetheme{AnnArbor} \usecolortheme{whale} \setbeamercolor{section in head/foot}{fg=white, bg=blue} \begin{document} \section{A test section} \begin{frame} test \end{frame} \end{document} gives the desired output (at least in my system), If it's not working for you, please edit your question and add a little, complete document (like the one I just gave) illustrating the problem.

comment New float and \listof command error
@Susan I was about to suggest the change to newfloat in an answer, but since you've already found out that this solves your problem, perhaps you could write an answer to your own question providing a little, complete example showing how using newfloat solves the problem.
