Useful notes for some of my answers:

CTAN lion drawing by Duane Bibby.

The demo option for graphicx simply replaces actual figures with black rectangles; do not use that option in your actual document.

comment Descriptive text for figure depending on location
@Bernard Are you sure? As far as I recall, cleveref only records the kind of object, but not its location, so \Cref{fig:figurename} will only give Figure #. On the other hand, as David suggested, varioref adds a location-associated string.

@Exterior Change \coordinate (appex2) at (-2.5,4); to \coordinate (appex2) at (-2.5,4.3); (instead of 4.3 use the desired value.)

Yes, of course I noticed. I just wanted to make it explicit and to acknowledge your involvement in the forest crusade!

comment \beamergotobutton size
@PatrickT Indeed; the size of the button is not easily changed using user hooks. You can see the definition of the button (which, by the way, is built using PGF) in, for example, beamerinnerthemedefault.sty. You'll notice that the dimensions of the button are hard-coded, so it's simpler to use a user-based modification as the one in my answer. Of course, you can avoid using TikZ and you can use PGF directly (as the class does), if you don't want to load TikZ.
