Useful notes for some of my answers:

CTAN lion drawing by Duane Bibby.

How do you accept an answer?](http://meta.tex.stackexchange.com/q/1852/3954)

minimal working example](http://www.minimalbeispiel.de/mini-en.html)

The demo option for graphicx simply replaces actual figures with black rectangles; do not use that option in your actual document.

@Anonj Well % causes TeX to ignore everything to its right so, in particular, the space is killed. There are some questions/answers on this site dealing with uses/dangers of %; see, for example, tex.stackexchange.com/q/34844/3954.

@Exterior Add something like \fill[orange!30,opacity=0.3] (base1.corner 2) -- (appex1) -- (base1.corner 6) -- cycle; just before the first \end{tikzpicture} in my example code. Change the 2 and 6 to the desired values for the vertices in the base.

comment LaTeX figures side by side
@AnonJ it suppresses an otherwise spurious blank space between the two minipages; if you don't suppress that space, you'll receive an overfull \hbox.
