Useful notes for some of my answers:

The demo option for graphicx simply replaces actual figures with black rectangles; do not use that option in your actual document.

comment Problem with includestandalone of a tikz graphics
@dustin as I said, I am not familiar with \includestandalone, but I guess that (as percusse) mentioned in his comment, the @ character causes problems; apparently the necessary change of category code cannot be performed directly in the document.

@dustin the easiest location is your current working directory (the same where your .tex file is). Another possible location would be in a local TDS tree (this will depend on your OS, but there are some question in this site addressing this).

@user135328 You're welcome!

A quick workaround is to create a file mycode.sty starting with \NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e} \ProvidesPackage{mycode} and then move there all the code I gave you (without \makeatletter nor \makeatother). Save this file somewhere TeX can find it (local TDS tree of current working directory) and then use \usepackage{mycode} in your document. (I didn't test it but it should work).

comment Circuitikz: arrows on the path and changing directions of arrow with variable resistor
@dustin No idea, sorry. I've never used \includestandalone.

@dustin the relevant code for the shape of bipoles is in .../tex/latex/circuitikz/pgfcircbipoles.sty; the styles are either in .../tex/latex/circuitikz/circuitikz.code.tex and/or .../tex/latex/circuitikz/circuitikz1.code.tex. Then it's just a mather of doing the necessary modifications; the code for the shapes uses the pgf layer syntax and not TikZ; fortunately, the commands used for the shapes are simple enough for me (I am not very familiar with the PGF layer).
