Useful notes for some of my answers:

The demo option for graphicx simply replaces actual figures with black rectangles; do not use that option in your actual document.

@LudovicC. \AtBeginDocument delays execution to a latter time than most preamble instructions.

You can use \AtBeginDocument{\renewcommand\labelitemi{$\bullet$}}.

@cimicimbo I updated my answer with a now complete solution using the tcolorbox package (make sure to have the latest version of the package installed in your system).

comment Abstract with heading to the left: abstract package broken?
@StefanMüller You can use \itshape right after the \noindent command inside abstract. This will change the font of the abstract body. Do you also need to change the font of the title "Abstract"?

@cimicimbo not at the moment (since you didn't mention this), but this can be fixed. The captions part might require a little more work, since their height is variable. In a few hours (I have to leave now) I can propose a possible solution for this. Just to be sure: should the captions appear inside the frame? and should they appear on every part of a split frame or just in the first/last?

Your tikz code shows five arrows leaving from the "B" block. Your intended result shows only four and some vertical lines are disconnected. Is this there something missing?

How shoul this caption be? Just some text or do you need a label and a counter as in "Excerpt 1: this is the caption text"; where should this caption appear in the different parts of a split frame?

Can you add to your question a simple, but complete document showing the box and fancytitle styles, so we can get a better idea of your settings?
