comment How productive are you with TikZ?
Let me add one more expansion of (2) that applies even if you are in a community of tex users. None of my collaborators have working tikz installations as part of their latex distributions, and are unwilling to fix this. Most of them are happy using inkscape, but are afraid of my tikz diagrams. This means that if I start making diagrams in tikz, I become the designated diagram person on the project.

comment defining a region to fill in a tikz shape
Wow, this is great! That answers my question exactly. I think it would be great if you genus to the tqft package. I made the picture of the handle by trial and error to get something that looked like what I would draw by hand... there is surely a better way of obtaining a picture than that.

@AndrewStacey: yes, that would be simpler for me, but I also wanted to learn about this myself. My frustration with this problem has taught me a lot about tikz... I like it a lot better now that I know it better.

@percusse, Here is an even simpler example of what I want: suppose I want to create a shape of a sun. It would consist of a disk with rays sticking out of it. I want [draw=black, fill=green] to fill the disk in green, but leave the outline and rays in black.
