@Speravir Sorry for not being clear. I only realized it should be customized after I posted it and started seeing responses. (Yes, a book)

Why do we need the \noindent\makebox commands? I mean, why doesn't it just put the footnote counter into text without spaces around it?

I like your example because it's simple... but I also want to specify the footnote number to be 4.

@Speravir does it allow for custom footnote number? In my example both footnotes should be numbered 4, because they are essentially the footnotes from the original work.

So... if I don't want to change the fonts, I can omit the patchcmd?

Looks cool. What is the minipage(is there a doc for it somewhere)? And what does the linewidth argument do inside of it?

That's great - the custom numbering is exactly what I needed. But which parts are actually required to make this work - for example, do I need makeatletter and patchcmd lines?

In fact Ligatures should be used instead, as per fontspec manual: but for consistency Ligatures=TeX will perform the same function as Mapping=tex-text.

In his answer Alan uses [Ligatures=TeX]. What is the advantage of using [Mapping=tex-text] or vise versa?

I guess I also don't want to learn about all the font features that do not related to Xetex - as it does things completely differently from what I understand. Most of the books out there - cover the font with the use of the babel and such.

I guess I am asking what I need to learn/read so that I could figure out anything by myself - not only the renewenvironment command... That link looks good! Thanks
