Is there a way to configure pdflatex to make all but the .tex and .pdf files hidden files? @Qrrbrbirlbel I don't have a lot of scripting experience but if it is something that could be understood by a relative novice and it works, then absolutely. |

Why doesn't TeX/LaTeX have reasonable defaults in certain cases? This seems more like a rant than a genuine question. |

As a devoted LaTeX user, how do I most effectively use software which is *not* TeX-based? cool, thanks for the suggestion. It's like the one ring! |

As a devoted LaTeX user, how do I most effectively use software which is *not* TeX-based? @FaheemMitha thanks for the suggestion, I will take a look. So far I have not found it to be too clumsy. Although I did consider markdown as a possibility. I am not totally committed to LaTeX if something else would fulfill my needs. |

As a devoted LaTeX user, how do I most effectively use software which is *not* TeX-based? @FaheemMitha thanks. I sympathize. I added an answer myself because I have begun writing things that I know will likely need to be in Word in html markup. Word just opens it and formats it without much fuss so it might be an option. So far I am pretty happy with it as a solution. |

Barebones or Packages I think that one of the greatest strengths of LaTeX over WYSIWYG word processors is the conceptual separation of content and formatting. When I was just learning LaTeX, it took a while to accept this and I would compile my docs constantly to see what they looked like. As I became more comfortable with LaTeX, I learned to focus on content when I was writing and now I rarely compile until the document is fairly complete. This isn't a specific answer to your question but I think it argues more for a stick to the basics approach and let LaTeX do what it does best while you focus on the content. |
