You don't even need the grey shape. Just the masked image is causing issues with Acroread (and convert).

+1 This is a good suggestion. I missed a key point in my question---the captions come too close to each other if I take such an approach. Perhaps I can tweak the caption width.... I didn't think of that last night.

To avoid copy and paste, you could make a separate .tex file where you define a bunch of macros like \def\hypothesis1{Ice melts faster than wood} ... \def\hypothesisN{....} Then you could use the macros in both places.
