comment latex' arrow tip with arrows.meta library
1 million per second is totally reasonable assuming an efficient implementation. That's 4000 clocks to render an arrow. As for screen rendering, graphics cards pump out billions of triangles a second, so that should be even faster. Really, it's no problem. Any diagram with more than a thousand arrowheads is illegible anyway.

comment LaTeX3 versus pure Lua
What you don't need actually is "macro expansion". So in fact, you don't need tex at all. What you need is typesetting in lua or python or some other language.

comment LaTeX3 versus pure Lua
"On the other hand, both LaTeX and Lua offer control structures such as loops or if/then/else clauses (LaTeX3 even more). Therefore you don't need Lua at all." — The point is that you often need much more than just if/then/else. If you look at any of the literally tens of thousands of questions on this site of people having programming problems, you'll see that what are just basic use of data structures and programming paradigms in other languages are unnecessarily convoluted in latex.

Totally agree with this question. Latex as a macro language has been a ship headed in the wrong direction for too long.

comment latex' arrow tip with arrows.meta library
@Symbol1: That's not a good a reason. Computers are really really fast. You could easily render millions of arrows per second.

comment pdflatex.exe on both dualcore-cores?
There's plenty of room for parallelization with any "shell-escape" commands.
