comment Cannot use custom styled nodes with matrix using Pgf 3.0.0
@ClaudioFiandrino: In some cases I use matrix just to avoid having to give a specific name to each node...

Interesting, but (tell me if I'm wrong) here we have two syntaxes that are incompatible between each version...

comment Line shown behind filled rectangle made with TikZ
I've just tested your answer with TexLive2013 (pgf 3.0.0) and works perfect. But I should want a solution working with the not so up-to-date pgf as well.

The method given by @PeterGrill in his answer is way easier to remember than the normal method given by this answer (with this comment I'm not attacking your answer Matthew!).

Using sharelatex doesn't work either: sharelatex.com/project/…

No, I have pgf version 2.10 (TexLive 2012).

This example doesn't work for me. BTW, I'm using TexLive 2012. I think I should not need a so up-to-date version to get working something as simple as this, but I may be wrong.

I can only say: that was an abuse of transitivity. Anyway, I hope your installation of TexLive is doing fine.

Yours is based in Ubuntu then, not directly in Debian.

What version of LinuxMint Debian edition are you using?

Please read my update above. About TEXLIVE_HOME, it's just a way to reference to the location where TexLive is installed. In your case, as you're using distro packages, it should be something similar to /usr/share/texlive in most cases.

If you want to create UML diagrams with tikz, you should look at TikZ-UML.

This works also for me with TexLive 2011 with pdflatex.

comment Problem with parpic and compactenum
@Werner: very good suggestion. I've just edited my answer to incorporate what you said, but I made the parbox 5mm narrower so that there is a small space between the text and the image.

That approach didn't work, so I tried another one that I'm going to write as an answer right now.

comment Convert PNG image to TikZ code
I know you are explicitly asking for a way to convert an image to TikZ, but: why, instead of converting, don't you try to create the flag by yourself? It's just a red rectangle, and over it two white rectangles and two dark blue rectangles...
