I am a mathematician by profession and quite a long-time (since around 1995 – as of now [2014], this means more than half of my life) TeX user by hobby.

I started with plain TeX, and much later (in the early 2000s) moved to LaTeX; I still use plain TeX occasionally (and when writing LaTeX classes/packages). Quite recently I also started to use ConTeXt.

I am a heavy Emacs user, though still a newbie – I started in 2001.

I have a blog about (among others) TeX and friends, located at http://mbork.pl/Content_AND_Presentation.

Better yet: \usepackage{etoolbox}\appto{\proof}{\unskip}

No, better change it as you've written!

BTW, I'm looking now at the definition of the proof environment, and I'm wondering why that skip appears... If I had more time (and my TeXbook copy at home;)), I could investigate this. Maybe tomorrow...

Great, thanks! So it was proof which introduced the unnecessary skip. Stupid me, I should have tried something like this...

Not at all, unfortunately. This is supposed to be coded in a class released in the wild, for people to use. No manual hacks like this allowed...

comment Is there a package (like showlabels) for amsrefs?
I also clarified the problem (though the code shows what I mean anyway, I hope;)...)

@DavidCarlisle: showlabels seems to know nothing about amsrefs.

I know, I know, people!!! One comment is enough! It's 22:30 here, I have a deadline, and I forgot about a MWE... ;-)

comment A problem with vertical positioning of `multicols`
Thanks a lot for the explanation! At least I know that I'll have to fix this manually (that's what I did anyway). And I hope that the LaTeX3 output routine will handle such things...;)
