comment How can I create a pdf document exactly as big as my tikz picture?
@Vivi: just on the command line when you compile your tex file. Just run "pdflatex survey.tex" add the option Konrad supplied.

comment How do I insert an image in LaTeX so it looks good on print?
If you've got a program that doesn't allow you to directly export to PDF, you still have an option. First print to PDF, which should nearly always be possible, even if you have to use PDFCreator under Windows ( sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator ). The printed PDF will often contain the vectorized image. Once you have the PDF, you can open it with Adobe Reader and select out just the desired area using the "Tools/Select & Zoom/Snapshot Tool". Once the right area is selected, it can be printed to PDF using File/Print with (again, under Windows) PDFCreator.

comment What is a good way to draw Dynkin diagrams in LaTeX?
I like tikz a lot, too. There's a great site that has a lot of examples, though no Dynkin Diagrams (yet!): texample.net/tikz/examples
