comment Biblatex: 2 custom fields, only one is working
@StefanvanderWalt, Actually you do can create new, custom fields by playing with the data models (see §4.5.3 of the manual) instead of remapping it to the official custom ones (user[a-f] etc.). There were a typo in Guido's answer (filed instead of field). Perhaps if you try now? I just ran it with my MWE, only changing where I used usera to the new mynote field with no apparent problem. I insist that his is the correct answer because it addresses more general usage and makes use of the full power of biblatex+biber.

comment always upright parenthesises and brackets
embrac does not affect brackets in math mode (since v0.5, according to the documentation). As per egreg's comment to How to get upright parentheses in the whole document?, there probably isn't a perfect solution to that. However, jfbu's answer to that question does try to achieve it.

comment unnumbered endnotes referenced by page and extract
Hi @cslstr, and thanks for the great answer!! It's indeed a very odd approach; while reading it I only looked for notes on statements that particularly interested me (it was actually very annoying with all those shorthands). But I think it suited the book: it's a biography with both casual and academic potential readers in sight.
