comment How can I replace footnotes for non-floating marginal notes?
yes. Sorry, I forgot to mention that your MWE isn't affected by that error, but one based on blindtext was.

The edited version gives the following error at \end{document}: ! Extra \else. <output> ...utpenalty <-\@M \@specialoutput \else \@makecol \@opcol \@startc..., an error that, if ignored, will result in an emergency stop: ! Incomplete \ifvoid; all text was ignored after line 65. [where the \end{document} is --henrique] <inserted text> \fi.

Besides accepting @GonzaloMedina's answer, it would be nice if your blog post also attributed the solution to him.

You shouldn't pass the geometry settings: actually, it's precisely what I believe would get you what you want. Perhaps with \usepackage[paperwidth=6.5in,paperheight=2.5in]{geometry} (I switched width and height) instead of the landscape class option?

Thank you! The only problem I've seen so far is that some notes are being placed in the page prior to the footnote marker (although there's enough space for it in the current page)...

following the solution to that question, I managed to achieve what you're expecting by adding \addtocontents{toc}{\protect\enlargethispage{\baselineskip}} immediately after the first section heading

comment Make the contents of a sentence fit to a line?
Instead of resizing the whole line, you can just adjust the spacing between characters with microtype. Check this answer (and the first comment to it) to How to adjust font size or kerning to fit line width?

comment Override global page style?
I don't have the Undefined control sequence warning here (maybe it's a sphinx issue). Specifying a new geometry within a single page is precisely what the example does: both \newgeometry and \restoregeometry commands will start a clear page by their very definition (I only added the \clearpage commands to illustrate it). Please, check if this question is not a duplicate to <tex.stackexchange.com/questions/6834/…;, as suggested by egreg (if so, consider closing this question)
