The first two links are broken.

comment Obtaining the behavior of both subfigure and subcaptionbox in the subcaption package
"A difficult task usually requires a complex solution, I don't think there are 'elementary' ways of doing it." I don't doubt this, but I want the "complicated solution" hidden from any of my source via abstraction. Surely you can appreciate this. As for the ABS, they have successfully abstracted the details to the point that everyone knows how to use it AND not have to concern themselves with any of the implementation details.

Re: your addition. This code may be understandable to you, but it is completely opaque to me. Now, I certainly admit that I don't know as much LaTeX as I would like (though TEX.SE has taught me an incredible amount). However, the solution "I would like" needs to be understandable to my coauthors as well. If you put this functionality into a package, wrote documentation for it, and got it into TeX Live, then this answer would be acceptable.

What should I say instead of "want"?

I want the subfigure label to appear after the subfigure caption but also don't want you to "introduce more checks". The code you have in the preamble is already completely unreadable.

comment Is there really something wrong with using the caption package for \ContinuedFloat?
So if I know that my derived document class is essentially the same as one of the officially approved document classes, how can I tell the caption package to hide its warning?

@Thruston YES :) I was able to adapt your suggestion to my actual problem. Again, please make this into a answer so I can accept it.

@Thruston That seems to work. Can you make this an answer and explain what the code is doing?

Thanks for checking. I added the word "infinite" to my question.

How would you make the example more "minimal"?

For the third time, this is just a MINIMUM WORKING EXAMPLE. I can't implement this solution with my actual problem.

Why doesn't this solution work inside of the align environment?

Ok, I think 1fil is white space of type "glue" and is specifically 1 unit of infinity of the first order (of the three possible orders). Please correct me if I am wrong.

The first use of 1fil in your reference is on page 87, but it seems to be used as though the reader is already familiar with it. Do you have another reference or can you explain it yourself?

Heiko, I gave a Minimum Working Example (MEW). I don't really have a sum over the Latin alphabet a nice sum of powers of alphas that I could replace with "...".

@egreg This is a Minimum Working Example (MWE), not my actual text.
