comment Displaying verse numbers on the left of corresponding column in multi-colmn text
Not a complete solution but it might help... Have a look at this answer to another question. Incidentally by egreg...

comment Prevent overlapping of elements on page
Thanks for your comments, but I really don't think the question is too vague. I'm asking whether there is a "general" command to detect overlaps of any kind, which will then alert you when it gets compiled, or prevent the overlap from occurring. I will build an MWE or two of specific problems I came across and add them to separate questions later. Working on documents of over 2500 pages it would really be helpful to detect overlaps without having to manually scan through the final product each time.

comment Use sections “inline”
I think I got it all working. Changing \refstepcounter{marginsec} to \refstepcounter{subsection} and \sbox0{\bfseries\themarginsec\quad} to \sbox0{\bfseries\thesubsection\quad} and also deleting \newcounter{marginsec}. The titlemarks picks it up well enough.

You've hit the nail on the head on the look of it, but will the sections still work as normal for links in the TOC and bookmarks as well as the titlesec titlemarks? I'll try and implement this solution anyway to see for myself.

Thanks for the answer, but looking at your example, I want the CATALAN to follow straight after the bulgarian. The number 2 should then be displayed before the line reading "menian, basque, bulgarian, CATALAN..."

I've tried your solution, but it breaks when I add my other stuff. Please have a look at the linked question.

comment LaTeX editor with live preview for Windows and RTL language support?
I'm using this XeTeX example http://en.foursenses.net/hebrewinxetex as my base. The Pdf4Eclipse renders some characters a bit funny in Eclipse, although opening the same PDF in another viewer shows it to be perfect.

comment Hebrew numerals
Thanks guys. I will mostly use it on the basis of a chapter and verse model as appears in the Tanakh. I will keep your advice in mind though for any future Hebrew projects.

comment Calculating the the exact width of the text and a lettrine
Thanks for the tip, but I am unable to install the picins package on my TeX-Live setup. Any ideas on how to get it working? There is a picinpar package on TeX-Live, would that be similar? I am trying to do the Bible in multiple languages. They all present this exact same problem, but at different stages. (Die rede vir die Afrikaans was maar omdat dit die eerste een van die lot was.)

comment TeXlipse doesn't generate any pdf file
@chepukha: Use egreg's path which he mentioned. /usr/texbin. That will automatically redirect to the proper installed path. If you've got 2010's MacTeX version it might be /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin. The /usr directory is hidden by default. To view it's contents select Go->Go to folder from a Finder window and type in /usr/ in the box. You could also use a tool such as TinkerTool or OnyX to display hidden files and folders if you really want to.

Thanks. I've found another solution which I'll post tomorrow as the site won't allow me to answer my own question right now. But your solution is a bit cleaner to implement and seems to work.

comment Firsttitlemarks does not appear consistently in header
@Marco: Thanks, that works perfectly. I misinterpreted the manual. I also had a 2007 copy floating around, instead of the new one.

Thanks. Try running it through XeLaTeX. I can't find a native \ifthesubsection or even a \ifsubsection command. Which manual are you refering to?

comment Firsttitlemarks does not appear consistently in header
@Raphink: I'm not quite sure how to add the counter to the pagestyle to have it work for every book's first verse. The code I've posted in this question can be treated as open-source as far as I am concerned.

comment titlesec: toptitlemarks and bottitlemarks broken when \section not called explicitly
Further to the answer above: To automatically calculate when to use Gonzalo's \IndOne or \IndTwo commands I've used this code: \newlength{\myIndent} \settowidth{\myIndent}{\IndOne In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth.} \ifdimless{\the\myIndent} {\textwidth} {\IndOne In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. \stepcounter{subsection} \subsection{}\IndOne And the earth was without form, and void;...} {\IndTwo In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. \stepcounter{subsection} \subsection{} And the earth was without form, and void;...}

comment Customise Table of Contents header and heading
I found this in the KOMA-Script manual. \setkomafont{captionlabel}{\usekomafont{←􏰀 descriptionlabel}} But it is not clear to me how to actually change the font for the TOC heading.
